Before The Hydration Backpack! Find Out How Johnny Did Without It

Back in the days before the hydration backpack, Johnny (fictitious character) was mountain trail riding with his water bottle securely attached to his bike frame. When Johnny decided to hydrate himself while extensively riding the winding trails, he decided to reach down and grab his bottle when a tree suddenly jumped out in front of Johnny!

Johnny swerved to get out of the way, but it was too late! He crashed, taking an enormous tumble on some rocks! As Johnny finished counting the little birdies flying around his head, he noticed that his water source flew over the mountainous cliff and now Johnny was out of H2O to quench his extreme thirst.

What’s Johnny to do now? He’s miles from the next water source, and his injury is going to keep him out of commission for a while. Johnny soon realizes he’s becoming very dehydrated as the hot afternoon sun is beating down on him that day. As Johnny sat under a tree to keep cool, he tended to his wounds and collected enough strength to get up. There’s a problem, though. During the cycling crash, Johnny damaged his bike, and now he has to walk the trail all the way back.

Johnny’s safety is now in jeopardy because he has to trek several miles in the heat with no water, and getting hydrated is not in the picture for several hours. Dehydration was now a major concern, and unfortunately Johnny had no choice but to deal with the situation at hand. Now if it was the future, and Johnny knew that one day there would be hydration backpacks available, do you think he would have purchased one for his next outdoor adventure? You better believe he would have!

It’s now winter and Johnny’s ordeal back in the summer is now a distant memory. Johnny has now packed his snowboard gear to head back to the mountains for some extreme boarding in some fresh powder. Johnny has not learned his lesson, because there happens to be hydration systems specially designed for snowboarders and skiers in a variety of backpack styles. Unfortunately Johnny is not aware of this, and he heads up to the resorts with his bulky over-the-shoulder canteen.

Johnny is pumped, and his adrenaline is shooting through his veins as he witnesses incredible powder on the top of the peak. Johnny, with his human instincts, makes sure that his canteen is full to the rim with fresh water, and that he has it securely over his shoulder. As Johnny arrives at the top, he notices that there are untouched trails with no tracks whatsoever, and he excitedly attempts to take on this un-chartered territory.

Johnny grabs his so-called water source and takes a big swig before he heads down the secluded trail. He’s making great time and as he’s cutting through the powder with precision, you won’t believe what happens next! A tree jumped out into Johnny’s path and knocks him out cold. When Johnny awoke, he noticed his board was split in half, and those birds flying around his head came back, but this time the birdies brought friends.

What’s Johnny to do now? No one has been down this path for the entire day, and just by looking at his situation, there’s a slim chance anyone will find him. Lucky for him, the day is somewhat warmer than other days, and he’s extremely thirsty. As Johnny starts to walk back up the mountain in the deep snow, he is getting tired and thirstier. Johnny starts to think back now to his summer experience, and then said to himself, here I go again!

Johnny didn’t even make it halfway up the steep hill when he soon realized that he was completely out of water. Now, not only was he out of necessary H2O, but he also didn’t bring a backpack with him so he did not have any spare dry clothes, or any safety items to assist him in emergencies such as this. Johnny was in a pickle again, and it was clear that he didn’t learn his lesson from the last incident when he was severely dehydrated and almost never made it back.

If Johnny had a hydration pack at that moment with a reservoir full of water, and with an additional bladder in his pack for backup, do you think his situation would have been better? You bet it would have!

Johnny Finally Learned His Lessons, And Seeks Out A Hydration System!

Johnny decides that enough was enough, and he started to search the Internet to find himself a system that could take care of his hydrating needs, especially under emergency situations that he has experienced in the past. As Johnny typed in “hydration systems”, he noticed that these really cool and functional hydration backpacks were popping up online, and he was extremely fascinated.

When Johnny started to read further, you could see the excitement come over him. He was like a Camel at an Oasis party, and he was absorbing all the information available to him. Johnny quickly noticed there were several backpack models and many styles to choose from. He was planning his next adventure, and with a complete hydrating system with ample bag storage, he would finally feel confident that he would remain fully hydrated, and be completely equipped with all his necessities.

The summer rolls around again, and Johnny decides to go kayaking and do a little camping as well. He’s feeling confident because he just made the purchase of his new hydration daypack that came complete with a comfortable padded shoulder strap, secure waistbelt, and harness to take the strain off his back while hiking to his camp destination.

The pack was equipped with a 100 oz reservoir, and with his experience he decided to purchase an extra water bladder for backup, plus Johnny also made sure that he got a backpack big enough to carry extra dry clothing, and additional supplies.

Nothing was going to stop Johnny now, and being an extremely good kayaker, he had no worries that this outdoor adventure was going to be a successful one. Johnny jumped into his kayak with this new hydration pack in hand, and as he was paddling through some wild white water back to his camping spot, you won’t believe what happened next! A tree fell out of the woods right on top of Johnny’s head and knocked him out of his kayak. Can you believe his luck? But don’t worry because he was feeling ok, even though he was counting a couple of pickerels flapping around his head along with a few birdies! As Johnny sat on the shore of the river watching his kayak float away, he had a smile on his face, because even though he had to walk several miles to his camp, at least he was prepared this time with his brand new hydration backpack system!

Things were looking up for Johnny this time, and getting dehydrated was a thing of the past. As he stood up to make his long journey back to camp, Johnny excitedly looks around to get his backpack and test out his wonderful pack’s features. He was waiting to use the bite valve system that allowed him to draw out the cool refreshing water, and re-hydrate his extreme thirst. You won’t believe what happened next! Johnny mistakenly strapped his hydration pack to his kayak, and now he just realized that it’s floating somewhere down stream.

The moral of this story is that hydrating your body with a quality functional hydration backpack system is not only convenient, but can be a indispensable way to maintain your hydration levels in your body, while you’re taking part in your favourite outdoor event. However, when you decide to venture out on your desired sporting activity, whatever you do, don’t take Johnny!

How To Filet A Fish

I have been an avid fisherman since I was a child, which was quite awhile ago. I have been fishing regularly for over 30 years and I have seen a lot of people who cannot properly clean their fish after catching it so I thought I might offer a little guidance.

First, it is absolutely crucial that you have a very sharp knife. I personally use an electric filet knife a lot, but you really have to have some experience to be able to use one properly. Using a standard filet knife, I prefer to use one with about an eight inch blade unless I am filleting a large gamefish in which case I will break out my “Crocodile Dundee” Alaskan Filet knife.

To begin filleting the fish, place it on a sturdy surface preferably about waist high for comfort. Take the tip of the knife and insert it along the dorsal fin of the fish and make small cuts towards the head keeping the blade against the bones of the fin. Now make a deep cut right behind the gill plate from the belly vertically up to the back of the fish meeting the cut you made along the spine.

Now, go back to the spine area where you made your fist cuts and now take deeper cuts following along the spine and ribcage and then work your way towards the tail. Stop short of the tail leaving that intact so that the filet you have is still attached to the rest of the fish at that point. Turn the fish so that the belly is towards you now and make any cuts to separate your filet in that area, then flip the filet over so that the scales are down and the meat side is up. This is where you really need to be sure your knife is sharp, starting near the tail hold the blade of your knife close as possible to the skin of the fish and begin to slide the blade back and forth towards the shoulder of the fish until you have completely removed the meat from the skin.

The final step for this side of the fish is to check the lateral line for small bones and cartilage and the bloodline. Some fish such as amberjack will have a large bloodline which you will want to remove for optimum taste. After you are sure all the bones and bloodline have been removed place this filet to the side and start on the next side. Doing it in this order is a personal preference, you can also complete the filleting of the other side first and then do the fine tuning of removing the bloodline and small bones.

Santa Cruz Church - the Portuguese Legacy in Bangkok

Santa Cruz Church, the church of the holy cross, was first built
the reign of King Taksin, a legacy of Thai-Portuguese relations
that date back to the 16th century.

Nestled among old houses on the river banks and newer
buildings inland, the reddish dome of the old Catholic church
is a prominent landmark on the Chao Phraya.

Descendants of the early Portuguese traders built the first
Santa Cruz Church in 1770 after the fall of Ayutthaya. The
Portuguese, the first Europeans in Thailand, arrived in
Ayutthaya shortly after they captured Malacca in 1511.

As the area was also claimed by the Thai King, the Portuguese
shrewdly dispatched an envoy to the court of Ayutthaya in the
same year to reassure the Thais of Portuguese intentions.

In 1516, Portugal signed a treaty with Thailand to supply
firearms and munitions. With the treaty came with the rights
to reside, trade and practice their religion in Thailand. This
brought the first Portuguese friars in 1567 who established the
Catholic Church in Ayutthaya.

After the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767, the Portuguese
continued with their military support to King Taksin in his
efforts to drive the Burmese out of Thailand. The supply of
cannon and muskets contributed significantly to King Taksin’s
army.

In recognition of their services, King Taksin granted the
Portuguese a plot of land to build a wooden church in an area
called Kudi Jeen. Thus, the church is sometimes called Wat
Kudi Jeen.

Over the next 65 years, the wooden church in Kudi Jeen fell
into a state of disrepair. In 1835, Cardinal Pallegoix rebuilt and
renamed the church, Santa Cruz Church meaning Holy Cross
Church in English.

The present Santa Cruz Church was rebuilt again in 1913 and
this structure has remained ever since.

The gate to the spacious courtyard is a short distance from the
Santa Cruz Pier on the Chao Phraya. A crucifix is in one
corner of the courtyard and a statue of Mary within a beautiful
garden in the other.

Within a smaller courtyard, surrounded by a low wrought iron
fence, stands the neat cream colored church trimmed in
reddish-brown and topped by a domed belfry. The sidewalls of
the church are decorated with stained glass etched with biblical
images.

The church and the inner courtyard are closed on weekdays.
To the rear of the church, away from the Chao Phraya, there’s
a little cemetery with nine tombstones encased in marble.

The well-kept church grounds are quiet on weekdays save for
the rhythmic strains of children reciting their lessons in the
Santa Cruz Convent nearby and the occasional passerby on the
way to the pier.

Like an urban oasis with narrow sois (lanes) leading to the
busy streets outside, the Santa Cruz Church is all that remains
of Portuguese influence in Kudi Jeen today.

The Santa Cruz Church is part of the Bangkok Communities that make up the the rich cultural milieu of Bangkok.

Santa Cruz Church first appeared in Tour Bangkok Legacies, a travel
site with a historical perspective of renowned places preserved
for posterity and the legendary figures who left these legacies
in the landscape of Bangkok. The author, Eric Lim, is a free-
lance writer who lives in Bangkok Thailand.

White Water Rafting - Preserve Your Experiences

White water rafting is simply a blast and a great way to get away from the clutter of life. Alas, your rafting experiences can fade with time. The best way to prevent this is to keep a white water rafting journal.

White Water Rafting Journals

Take a minute to give some consideration to your most recent rafting trip. What sticks out in your mind? Where the rapids raging, the water low or somebody hilariously falling out of the boat? Now think about the first time you ever went white water rafting. I bet you can’t remember much about the trip besides a few snippets. The experiences you’ve forgotten are lost to time. If you keep a white water rafting journal, this won’t be the case.

There are famous instances of people keeping journals throughout time. Of course, Anne Frank’s Diary is the best example. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. While your white water rafting experiences better be more lighthearted, keeping a journal will let you remember them as the years pass.

A good white water rafting journal combines a number of characteristics. First, it should be compact. Second, it should have a case to protect it from getting wet and turned to mulch. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. Cues should include:

1. Who you went white water rafting with,

2. Where you went rafting and the time of year,

3. Who you met and contact information for them,

4. The river and weather conditions,

5. How challenging the river was, and

6. Any events that occurred while off the river.

At the end of the rafting trip, you should be able to get the following from your journal:

1. Contact information for other rafters you met,

2. Details of the trip, whether you would go again and perhaps better times to do so.

3. Memories to reflect upon years later, and

4. Something to pass on to your friends, children and grandchildren.

To get the most out of your white water rafting journal, you should write in it just before you start, during breaks such as lunch and when you return. If you go with friends or your family, the journal will turn into a keepsake for the family. During family events such as the holidays, it makes for great reading. As you grow older [and we all do], the journal will make great fodder for reflection.

White water rafting is a blast that shouldn’t fade with time. Make sure to preserve the experience with your white water rafting journal.

The War Against Pool Algae and How To Enlist !

The War Against Pool Algae and How to Enlist Copyright © 2005 Lee Coleman http://www.propertyservicesinfrance.com

Brief description -

The War Against Pool Algae and How to Enlist

Full Description -

Swimming Pool algae is one thing you don’t want in your pool, find out how you can deal with this invader and protect your pool.

The War Against Pool Algae and How to Enlist

It’s probably not one of the things I would read about out of choice, but I thought I would try to cover as much ground as possible on the subject of algae as it helps to know what you are up against when you get it in your pool.

Most of us who work on pools or own a pool will have at some time encountered algae in one form or other, but what form? Algae can grow as a result of several things but is usually most prolific in the summer months.

The arrival of algae can be as a result of poor maintenance, cheap chemicals, plant infestation or a number of other reasons. There are in excess of 20,000 known types of algae, thankfully only a few of these find their way into our pools.

Our mission lies in keeping the microscopic invaders at bay preventing colonization which causes the algae to bloom.

We are at war !

How to Prevent Algae.

Try to always practice good chemistry maintenance and keep your water at neutral pH and total alkalinity at all times. If you have problems keeping your pH stable, try using a stabilizing sanitizer like pHree & clear, it balances you pH and keeps the water clear and at total alkalinity stopping unwanted pH swings and reduces your chemical usage.

Keep your pool clean by vacuuming frequently and brushing the walls paying attention to the corners, steps, lights and liner seams. If that all sounds like too much like hard work buy a pool robot, it’ll wander around your pool doing all that for you.

Keep your filters clean and run your system running as long as possible, don’t forget a good rule of thumb is 1/2 the water temperature to calculate running hours, for example, if the water is 24 degrees, you should be running your pump for at least 12 hours a day.

Use an effective algaecide weekly as a preventative measure.

Types of algae:

Black Algae - Sometimes referred to as blue-green algae it usually appears as randomly scattered black splotches and has become the bane of the service industry. This type of algae attaches itself to pool walls (mostly block and render type pools) and can send roots deep under the surface. Couple that with the fact that it’s very slippery and has a protective gelatinous coating making it particularly impervious to chemical treatments, and you have a formidable enemy.

This insidious strain can resist most chlorine shock treatment and even most algaecides, the best way to deal with it involves a combination of chemicals and plenty of elbow grease. You will have to scrape and brush hard to remove the protective sheath and leave it vulnerable to the chlorine.

Green Algae - This is the most common type of algae, also with a gelatinous coating protecting it against chemical warfare. Unlike black algae, green algae, doesn’t attach itself to pool walls, but it does cause the pea soup or green haze look of the neglected pool. Fortunately because this type of algae floats in the water, chlorine shock treatments can effectively eliminate it, make sure you brush and clean the pool in conjunction with plenty of pumping and filtering time.

Yellow Algae - Sometimes also referred to as mustard algae it is a far more advanced form than green or black algae - perhaps the SAS of algae platoons! It has a more advanced cellular structure and can appear on walls and shaded areas of a pool. Caution must be used when it comes to getting rid of yellow algae, if you attempt to brush it, it can flocculate (disperse) and spread throughout the pool making a bad problem even worse. If this does happen use a flocking agent such as Sparkle Plus, it will make the particles clump together and deposit them straight into your filtration system where you can flush it to waste. Aggressive chemical treatment can help, used in conjunction with increased filtering. A number of algaecides that specifically target yellow algae do exist, you may have to try several types before you find one that’s right for you.

Pink Algae - This is not one of the most common types of algae you’ll come across. It usually shows up at the waterline, distinguished as a pink, orange or reddish ring. It’s actually a fungus rather than algae and can also attach itself around lights, ladders and other fixings. It’s resistant to chlorine so a good scrubbing and vacuuming should get it off.

Don’t forget that proper pool maintenance can ensure that you rarely have to battle with algae, if you notice your pool turning after being away for a couple of weeks or lack of filtration due to breakdown etc the sooner you address the problem the easier it will be do get rid of it.

If your pool looks like a pond, there are chemicals which can effectively “Napalm” your pool back to life, they usually cause a reaction resulting in your pool turning “milky” at first, regular filter cleaning (every two hours) and continual pumping may bring it back to life eventually. Bar far the best option is to drain the pool and refill with fresh water. It’s best in the case of liner pools, to do this 25 or 50% at a time until all the water has been changed.

Don’t forget, once you have won the battle the war is not over! Algae is one of the oldest forms of life on earth so if you give it half a chance it will return to thrive, take over your pool, and who knows, even THE EARTH!!!! Enlist today together we can win this war.

I hope you never have a close encounter of the algae kind, look out for our next article coming your way soon.

Light Weight Camping/Adventure Food.

Before venturing upon your next great adventure into the wilds you may wish to do some organizing and testing/research and find some tasty lightweight foods to take along to keep the weight down to a minimum ,whether you are planning a canoeing/kayaking or bike hike or just a trek to your favourite special place , there is no need to carry unneeded excess weight and packaging.

There are plenty of options available and before deciding upon certain types it is best to try the tastes as some lightweight foods can be very ordinary in taste especially in bulk amounts,a little bit is ok but too much can be ………yuk! So taste and try before you decide to take these foods along, otherwise this is a good food source to have on-the-go without cooking or even as a snack in the boat or on top of that mountain.

Dehydrated foods have been around for a long time and can be easily found in the local supermarket ; things like carrots, peas, beans, potatoes; you could even have some in your cupboard at home.

Versatile dried fruits are my favourites, such as,raisins, dates, apricots, sultanas, and dried apples are the perfect snack.

Premade packaged meals can be a useful take along and so can vacuum sealed/cooked fish [salmon etc ] , just be kind with the rubbish.

Nuts are great ; almonds, peanuts and best of all cashews.

Beef jerky is really yum and addictive and you can get a hot variety as well.So make sure you have plenty of water handy if you decide you want to burn your faced off !

Noodles are an old favourite although the styrene containers are a worry to dispose of in the middle of nowhere, because you cannot just leave this rubbish behind anywhere.

Powdered milk is an aquired taste for that caffeine hit or cup of tea; although if weight is not a problem, long life milk is handy and comes in skim as well. Powdered orange and sports drinks can add a change too.

Freeze dried foods can be helpful and could be freeze dried chicken , lasagna , corn and pasta and come in good sturdy packaging.

Health food shops stock a massive selection of dried foods and muesli bars and other interesting bars of peanuts/nuts/honey/carob etc;that pack well in your backpack.

Specialty items are more difficult to find at particular stockists that carry army type foods like dried eggs and things that are designed to last a long time and take little space and can get wet if a canoe/camping adventure is planned.

Storage of these items is very important and sturdy good quality re-sealable plastic bags are ideal as they can be recycled and used again and will keep the rubbish to an absolute minimum; the food can be sorted into day lots or groups and a master bag can keep them together and catch any possible spillage.Plastic bags can be packed into nooks and crannies to maximise space with no hard or sharp edges to worry about in your backpack. Before packing ;get rid of any surplus packaging so you don’t carry rubbish all over the countryside Hoping you can find this article of use and happy camping!.

Why this Disease Affects Everyone

Growing up in the 80’s was a great time in my life. One thing about this era that was sad is that it was the time Aids started to kill people. At first everybody thought it was a gay disease and that if you weren’t gay you couldn’t catch it. As I remember it was in the mid 80’s when heterosexuals and people that used IV drugs started to catch the disease as well. Because of this a lot of research was started and expanded the scope of knowledge surrounding the disease. This was good as a better understanding of the disease was needed.

When I was growing up I was very close to my little sister Rachel. I was six and a half years older than her and as a result took care of her on a frequent basis, and loved it. In later years she got hooked to drugs during college. It bothered everybody in our family that she used drugs. This went on for years. In the spring of 2003 my sister tested positive for Aids. The day I learned of this I was so incredibly sad because that was the day that I knew my sister stopped caring whether she lived anymore or died.
