Make the most of the Teachings of London’s Numerous Museums

London has in people’s opinions some of the best museums on earth in truth it has hundreds of museums & exhibitions both large & small. There are numerous to choose from despite this for logical reasons a few are more visited than others. A number of the accepted museums to drop in at today are the British Museum, Natural History & Science Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Imperial War Museum & the National Maritime Museum.

The British Museum has in recent times opened once more with a rich repair and is generally agreed as being the greatest museum in the entire world where over four-thousand year old Egyptian Mummies witness a significantly more action packed life after death than they ever imagined. Situated in the Centre of the Capital this is presently one of the key museums in The City to take your children to. There are bags of exciting collected works & galleries to view, some that include the reading room and the most recent African collection, which experts advertise as being the world’s biggest & best in terms of variety and quality with more than two hundred thousand objects.

The Natural History & Science Museums are perfect for either youth & grown-ups. The Natural History Museum building is incredible and any dinosaur supporter will simply want to get lost in the full history that escorts this amazing museum.

The Science Museum is astounding, very up to date in relation of when new breakthroughs are made. There are a handful of scientists at the museum performing genuine experiments that you can take part in if you wish. There are loads of exhilarating hands on things to do for either youngsters & adults. Find the best offers on London’s Attractions and Museums here http://www.timeout.com/london/museums-attractions.

The Victoria & Albert museum which is also more frequently known as the V&A is a huge museum packed to the top with culture. It is worth a trip just for the cast quarters alone. The museum itself is free of charge to go in and is the planet’s prevalent decorative & arts and design museum. The Imperial War Museum looks a lot at the experience of the war rather than its prosecution. Some amazing demonstrations like that of the “The Blitz” & “The Holocaust” are enormously touching.

Buying New Car Blues

When we think of buying a new car, we rarely have the initial “buying new car blues”, until the thoughts actually begin to come….thoughts of actually having to go through the ugly process of dealing with a dealership.

“Why do we have to go through this,” is often one of our first thoughts, as getting the blues is not what we actually desire. We want this to be an enjoyable experience…one that we will remember in a positive manner for years to come…as we enjoy the new vehicle sitting in our driveway or garage…or better yet as we motor on down the road…feeling the way this new baby takes the corners.

However, there seems to be such a terrible taste in our mouths after we have been through the traditional process in America…which results in the “buying new car blues”.

It’s awful. Really it is. How can you take such a huge occasion in someone’s life and turn it into such a miserable experience…well my opinion is you just add the dealership to the equation…that’s how. Awful!

Buying New Car Blues is a phenomenon as far as I am concerned. You roll over in bed the morning of your purchase. You kiss your spouse or significant loved one…knowing that today is the day that you will add a new vehicle to the family. Very exciting indeed.

You pack up the car with the two kids (big mistake as you didn’t remember that this process take about 20 hours) and you head on down to the dealership. You pull up to the lot and are greeted by a big “cheesy” grin from a guy named Gus who claims that today is his first day.

He immediately begins with a line of questioning as if you were being “cross-examined” for a robbery down the street at the local convenience store (mind you…today is his first day).

You find the vehicle that you are interested in, drive it…then the real hell starts.

As you return on your test drive…he throws the corny line out… “Hey…why don’t you park the car over there in the sold line”? Ok, really…I am not 6 years old…and I do realize that there is NO “sold line”.

You wander on inside to “give your offer”…your two kids and spouse are being as patient as any humans could possibly be…giving you a quick glance every time and again to ensure that you have not “lost your patience yet”.

You sit down in the booth…no calculator…no computers…no TV to pacify the kids…no newspaper…no nothing…and “Gus” begins asking your life story. Name, Rank and Serial Number please. 87 references…. “And no…we will never call them…it’s just for the bank” is his reply. He then whips out his “4 square”…you know the one…the one by the end of the battle that has 18 different colors of “Sharpie” on it…telling you that you don’t know a thing about automobiles…what they cost…and what you should pay. Talk about demoralizing…and the onslaught of “buying new car blues”.

You finally agree to a price…a payment…and are patted on the back from Fred…the CLOSER… (he has been at the dealership for more than 1 day we are sure)…and assisted down the hall to meet “JAKE”, the “Business Manager” that is “just going to tie up the paperwork…you know…dot the ‘I’s’ and cross the ‘T’s’.

Jake starts in on how stupid you would be if you don’t buy this and don’t buy that…and how your new car is going to brake in half tomorrow…and you better be covered…….sheesh. ENOUGH!

Buying new car blues! It is a phenomenon. What else could you have such great thoughts of…that ultimately turn into such a terrible experience?

Really…I challenge you to find a distant rival.

I advise everyone to pass on this experience all together…as there is a better way…and a way to eliminate the “buying new car blues”.

Sandals and Traditional Japanese Sandals

Before the shoes…were sandals. But in some regions, the shoes were first devised rather than the more comfortable and light sandals. Throughout the world, there are artifacts and strong evidences that sandals had been existing since human first inhabited earth. These evidences were not only found in the relics but may also be sighted in the similarities of terminology to connote something that is worn for feet covering. Take for example the Latin word sandalium, or the French sandale and even the Arabic andal. All these seem to be linked by a common idea of a sandal.

The variety of sandal types today attests to man’s mastery over sandal making and the use he has found in the item. In the following sections of this article, we will discuss some of the most popular sandal types in the world. Most of the types mentioned here will only be discussed in brief since we will try to focus on the types of sandals traditional to Japanese culture alone.

espadrille - is a type of sandal characterized by the rope sole or rubber sole with a cloth covering for its upper section.

flip-flop - is Japanese in origin and is characterized by being backless. This sandal is held on the foot by means of a thong between the second toe and the big toe.

Gladiator- named after the sandals worn by gladiators of the Roman arenas, straps that are fastened to the flat sole to hold the foot in place characterizes this sandal.

huarache or huaraches - is a Mexican sandal with flat heels and woven leather thongs for straps.

scuffer - is usually worn as playshoes among children and as sportshoe among adults. Scuffers are frequently made out of lightweight materials and are characterized for their sturdy sole.

shoe - is a footwear that is patterned to fit the foot. Usually, the upper is made of leather, plastic or rubber and the sole is made out of much heavier and sturdier material.

talaria - is frequently mentioned in most Roman myths. This is a winged sandal worn by Hermes, a Roman god.

Zori or pusher - originally a Japanese, this is a sandal made of rubber sole and two straps that are held on either side which meets at the upper part between the big toe and the second finger.

Among these general types of sandals, the most popular types are the zori, the huarache and the gladiator.

Japanese sandals

The three of the basic Japanese sandals are the geta, tatami and the zori. Geta sandals are more commonly known among Americans due to the popularity of Geisha women images. There are varieties of geta sandals but two of the best-known are the vinyl and the wooden. The latter is worn during ordinary days while the vinyl geta is worn on occasion. Geta is named as such because of the sound (click clack) they produce when being walked.

The tatami sandals on the other hand are included in the casual category. These are typically worn for normal days and daily wear. The term tatami was derived from the Japanese word for straw. The tatami sandals are crafted from tatami, the same material used in making the mat flooring for traditional Japanese houses. Traditionally, the thong either comes in black or red velvet.

For formal occasions, zori sandals are worn. Along with these sandals come tabi socks that are split between the large toe and the second toe.

Details Of The AT&T Universal Rewards Card Application

The AT&T Universal Rewards Card is designed for customers who have very good credit and want a credit card that offers an extensive rewards program. It works as both a credit card and a calling card, however, if you choose to use it as a calling card, you may find the rates higher than other calling card services. On the positive side, it offers two free directory assistance calls per month, up to 30 free phone minutes per month, and loss and theft insurance for a wireless phone.

The rewards program offers five points for every dollar spent at supermarkets, gas stations, drugstore, and when purchasing AT&T products and/or services. For all other purchases, one point per dollar spent is earned. The maximum number of points a cardholder can earn per year is 75,000, and they have a five-year expiration date.

The AT&T Universal Rewards card has no annual fee and has an introductory rate of 0% on balance transfers for the first twelve months. For purchases and balance transfers after the introductory period, the rte is 13.57% variable and a minimum cap on cash advances of 19.99% based on the LIBOR rate. The balance transfer fee after the introductory period is 3% with a $5 minimum and $75 maximum, and a cash advance fee of 3% with a minimum of $5.

This card will be the most advantageous to those who plan to utilize the calling card feature, the rewards programs, and the introductory rate on balance transfers. With no annual fee and a reasonably low interest rate for a rewards card, this is quite an attractive package.

The benefits the cardholder can expect to receive from the use of the AT&T Universal Rewards card include the following:

• It can also be used as a calling card

• No liability to the cardholder for unauthorized use

• Online access to account information

Discovering The Benefits Of Home Schooling

Home schooling is in demand nowadays. You might be thinking of home school for your child. There are a lot of reasons why you should educate your child at home. Although this decision may not be an easy one, it may be something to consider. There are questions that need to be discussed and there are also some already answered for you. Before you can make this very important decision for your child’s education, you should think long and hard and get all the answers to your questions.

What are the benefits of home schooling? Here are a few:

First, your child will get all the attention and that attention will come from you. Although this depends on the child’s level of studying, he or she should be comfortable at home. You can have all his time and control his studies. Sometimes, children in school don’t pay enough attention to their teachers because they want their mommies to guide them. Some don’t trust their teachers and will not take their word. Friends and playmates may distract his learning process. All the issues your child experiences in a large class will vanish forever with home schooling.

Of course you know your child better than others do. You will be given the chance to tailor all the lessons that suit your child’s interest of learning. You can keep him comfortable the way he wants it which can never be experienced in the conventional classrooms.

If your child is among those kids who are prone to peer-pressure, then home schooling is the answer. Learning is acquired in school but if the child cannot learn the right way, it would be better that he stay home and be taught.

Your child may want a different type of approach to learning which he cannot get in school. The teacher in school will not of course treat every student differently with their different standards of learning. Your child is not the only student in school so if he wants to be treated differently, you may have to teach him at home so that the learning process will be easy.

You will be able to watch your child’s improvement. You can set a time frame or a limit which he needs to accomplish say, for example, a chapter in a book. Allow him time to absorb and finish the chapter in a week so you can finish all the lessons in a timely manner.

Your child may not be socially capable of mingling with the other students. This may be due to phobia or fear. If your child is like this, would you still expose him in a crowd to which you know that he will never feel comfortable no matter what happens? Of course you wouldn’t.

These are just some of the benefits of home schooling. The best way is still to ask your child what he really wants.

Change Your Thinking — Change Your Life!

The only thing in life we have direct control over is our thoughts and our thoughts determine how we experience life.

You may know of someone who has what appears to be a perfect life … a loving family, a beautiful home, an amazing career … but if this person is filled with negative thoughts, he or she is not able to fully enjoy what life has to offer. This person may be focusing instead on what is missing or what is perceived wrong.

You may also know of someone who has faced a difficult situation, lives a humble existence, has to work two or three jobs to make ends meet, but regardless of the situation, always has a smile, a wave and an appreciation for everything good in life.

The good news is regardless of our current circumstances, we can choose our thoughts and how we respond to any situation. We can choose to be positive, loving and appreciative, or negative, judgmental and critical. It’s all up to us.

When you find yourself caught up in negative thinking, recognize what is happening and stop yourself. Then ask yourself one or more of the following questions.

1. How is this negative thinking serving me?

2. Am I willing to let something beyond my control consume my thoughts and ruin my day?

3. Is there something I can do about this to make it better?

4. How can I turn this negative thought into a positive one?

Jack Canfield, co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, teaches that 90 percent of our thoughts are habitual. If you find the majority of your thoughts are negative, it is because you allowed them to make themselves at home in your mind so they play as recordings over and over again. You may find it difficult to shut them out, even though you want to.

Since 90 percent of what you think about is habitual, you can create new thoughts to replace the negative ones and develop new thinking habits. A good place to start is by playing a little game.

Every time a negative thought enters your mind, acknowledge it, then find a positive one to replace it. Now this won’t always be easy, but it can be done. You can be as conservative or as extreme as you like. Here are a few examples to get you started …

Negative — The taxes on my pay stub are outrageous!
Positive — I have a job.

Negative — I hate doing housework!
Positive — I have a home.

Negative — My clothes are too tight!
Positive — I have enough food to eat.

Negative — The only parking space I could find was at the far end of the lot!
Positive — I am capable of walking and I have a car.

Negative — My heating bill is huge!
Positive — I am warm in the winter.

The next time you are faced with a negative thought, try taking control and making a positive change. In the famous words of Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.”

Networking Magic

YES– it is true that Networking is an art that must be mastered. However, for those of you that are new to the networking game and the art of mastering it, please READ ON. While you do not want to be in a position at social function of hanging with the same person all night, if you really want to make your network work for you, there are some surefire tactics that you must employ. Networking is much more than simply handing out your business/calling card and moving to the next ‘target’ in the room. I am always so surprised by the number of people that exchange business cards and do not take advantage of the possibility of creating an instant marketing campaign.

They hand over their business card, say a few words and move on without leaving an impression that would inspire you to tell others about them. Get away from the fallacy of believing that networking is about who you know. Master networkers know that the true power in your network is really about WHO KNOWS YOU! Learn to engage in meaningful dialogue with others and you will rapidly multiply the dispersion of your message. Going home with a pocket full of business cards is no indication of how strong your network is. You must implement strategies that will not only facilitate building a good network of people that know you but also create solid alliances with others.

Below are 5 strategies that have helped me grow personally, professionally and take my businesses to new heights! Try one, two or all of them and be sure to drop me a note and share your success story. I would love to feature it in my next newsletter.

-GRAB their Attention and Make’em Want to Listen!
Master your 30-second introduction! You must have something to say and know how to say it quickly and with impact! If you do not have the ability to articulate the brand you call you, get it in order before your next network mixer. There are three simple steps to creating a 30-second introduction. Don’t miss the opportunity to have people know who you are by being unprepared to get their attention. If you missed my article last week, drop me a note and I’ll get it to you ASAP.

-Business/Calling Card Buzzzzz!

Put your business/calling cards to work for you! Business/calling cards are at the heart of the first introduction that you make with others. Ensure that your business card serves as a true marketing engine for you. Take the time to design an impressive card with a tagline or message that will get attention and make people want to contact you. Try using the front and back of the card to get your message across, however do not cram in too much information - leave some “white space.” Business cards with visual clarity are more likely to be read AND kept for future reference.

-Use Reverse-Networking not Empty Dialogue!

Don’t waste your time or anyone else’s with fruitless conversations that lead to nowhere! After giving your 30-second introduction, spark a dialogue that shows you have a true interest in understanding what it is that person does. This works much better than simply exchanging business cards and talking about yourself the entire time. Learn to ask probing questions– something as simple as “So tell me what it is that you do” and following it up with “Hmmm, that sounds interesting, tell me more” is enough to initiate a meaningful not empty dialogue. People love it when you truly take an interest in what they have to offer. Besides this creates a memorable experience and when you contact them AFTER the event, you will have plenty of focused and dedicated time to really talk about what you do. It’s a reverse networking tactic that has not only helped me build a network of people that know me but create some very meaningful alliances with others as well.

-Use the ‘Power of Introduction’ to Extend that Buzzzz about You!
Take advantage of the “Stick and Move” strategy to create more buzz about you! Now that you understand and know something about the person that you just met, introduce them to someone else in the room that you know. Not only will you make a memorable (stick) impression, but it also allows you to make a brief introduction and keep it movin’. If you are a lone ranger and do not know anyone else at the event YET, let the person know that you will be following up with them in a few days because you have a colleague that you would like to introduce them to. Now….you are really starting to have people know WHO YOU ARE and creating alliances with others as well.

-Implement a Follow-up Campaign!

Get people to really know who you are! If you find that you are handing out plenty of business/calling cards but your phone isn’t ringing - there could obviously be several factors that contribute to this. However, one may very well be that you do not have an effective follow-up strategy - if you employ one at all! Following up with those that you meet is imperative and may very well be the one strategy that gets you closer to your ultimate goal. Do not make a big deal out of follow-up. This only leads to procrastination and no follow-up. A quick and simple email a few days after the event just to express your pleasure in having met and extending an official invitation to keep in touch. That’s it! Now you have started to establish an open AND welcomed relationship that could blossom into something at the NextLevel - whatever that level may be for you!

Business Events to Increase Profits

Business events can help small businesses to generate additional income. Besides the fact that an event requires a lot of planning and organizing as well as the business has to invest money without knowing how much of that investment will make it back into its bank account.

So is having a business event really worth all that effort? The answer is very simple. Yes, events are a good way to further increase business profits.

A business event offers a great opportunity to get clients and potential clients together. The real benefit of this approach is that your marketing message gets for sure delivered and that you can even talk to customers in person to explain your products functionality and to answer instant questions. If you do regular marketing you will not have this advantage. You do not even know if people read your marketing message. With an event you are much more in control.

You can also present yourself as an expert in your field as a speaker or get somebody that you know would be of interest for your clients. Imagine Donald Trump showing up on your real estate investment workshop to hold a speech. I know, this is probably too expensive to become real but you get the idea.

If you think big, you might turn your event into something that people think they have to attend and that they will miss out on something really important. Create the need to attend and you can even charge for admission. Motivational Speaker events with 5 or 6 celebrities speaking are those kinds of events.

Holding an event might not work for every business, but it is certainly a very powerful tool to attract new clients and to help turning customers into return-buyers.

An event does not have to be for large audiences only. A small event catering your best customers can be important for your business/customer relationship. Imagine the exclusive remote hotel in the mountains as the location for your event. The customers will feel special about the treatment they receive and where shall they go besides your event meetings? The customers will spend the day at your seminar giving you the opportunity to build better relationships with them. Better business relationships with customers will mean increased profits in the long run.

Monks Make Mac Movies (Magnificently!)

Thanks to Apple, complete amateurs can make impressive video productions and share them with friends on DVDs. All that is needed is a digital video camera, a Macintosh computer with a Superdrive (one which will burn DVDs), and the iLife suite of applications which normally come with Macs, and of course, a bit of good taste and discretion. This I know from actual experience, and I’ll try to share how it can be done.

In February of 2003, monks from Atma Jyoti Ashram, a small Hindu monastery in Southern California, went on a pilgrimage to India, visiting holy places throughout the country. Being lovers of India, we wished to record outstanding events from out journey so we could share them with friends and relive them ourselves through our videos and photos. We took over twenty hours of video in our two month sojourn, and when we returned, we faced the task of editing the footage to make viewing more manageable.

We had a 1 Ghz iMac and iMovie-Apple’s entry level movie editing application-so we proceeded to hook our Mini-DV camera up to the Mac with a fire-wire cable and import footage using iMovie’s import feature. There was a lot of footage that was either poorly filmed, too long, or uninteresting in retrospect. That still left lots of film to work with. We began by getting an overview of what was available, and putting together a mental picture of the story we wanted to tell with the video. Then, by placing bits of video in the “timeline” of clips, the story we wanted to tell began to take shape.

To learn the best way to make a video that did not have the hallmarks of amateurism, a search on Google yielded gobs of tutorials, tips, and techniques for using iMovie, and video editing in general.

When the clips were arranged to our satisfaction in the timeline, we proceeded to add audio and music (using iTunes-iMovie is well integrated with this and other iLife applications) to supplement the audio on the clips so as to make for more continuity. Then we added transitions (which iMovie provides in abundance) between clips to give the video a more polished look. Then came the titles, subtitles, and effects, which began to turn what started as a mess of random footage into a cohesive, semi-professional looking (O.K., at least not totally amateurish) bit of video. Then came the agonizing step of taking an objective look at the end results and pruning out footage to make it more succinct, then tweaking features to give it the final finished look.

After creating a few short features of this sort, we then used iDvd to create an accomplished looking DVD. iDvd makes it easy by supplying quite an array of professional looking Themes, or allowing you to modify and edit existing Themes, or create your own. We then imported the final video featurettes into the desired Theme, and proceeded to burn our DVD. Earlier versions of iDvd were a bit buggy in the burning process, but have improved in later releases.

Those wishing more options for video editing and DVD burning can use Apple’s mid and pro level applications, Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro.

The end result surprised us and those we showed it to. So our pleasant experience has solidified us as Mac addicts, though we needed no convincing as to the usefulness of Apple’s products.

Swami Tarakananda is a monk at Atma Jyoti Ashram in Borrego Springs, California.
