Paris Hilton has consistently stayed at the very top of search engine searches for months and many a self publisher has cashed in on her name to win huge chunks of traffic to their sites via search engines.

There are many other beautiful young ladies in the world but this particular one has managed the feat of staying on people’s minds for a long time.

What this proves is that all a self publisher needs to be able to draw huge traffic online, is a carefully crafted PR or image strategy. In the old offline days this meant distributing news releases to the media or drawing media attention in a certain direction of interest. In today’s wonderful world of blogs, the blog itself is a powerful media for communicating any message you want to get across.

What would usually take ages to painstakingly build in the offline world of newspaper editors and TV news anchors who have to be persuaded or cajoled into using a news release, takes a few hours or a few days at the most to accomplish, online. All a self publisher really needs are a few posts at their own blog and even at somebody else’s.

Focusing on creating the right image that will drive loads of traffic to your blog and get other bloggers to link to your posts like crazy is an objective that will pay off big for any self publisher. It is certainly well worth the effort of learning the basics of PR and image creation. This is the sort of learning from experts that can easily be done online for free.

Piano Composers of the Classical Period - Heroes of Simplicity and Democracy

About the time of the American Revolution, European society was also changing. In the arts, the simple lines and elegance of the ancient Greeks and Romans were being used by artists, architects and composers. Like the architecture of this time, music of the Classical period presented clean lines and was uncluttered and balanced in form.

This was in contrast to the Baroque period that preceded it with exaggeration and complex detail that glorified those who paid for it - kings, queens and wealthy business people. During this period of Enlightenment the political rallying cry was Jean Jacques Rousseau’s “Back to nature.”

Western History, Greek democracy, and the Roman Republic were seen as models for the new age of Enlightenment. Eighteenth century artists and musicians were inspired by the ideals of beauty, order and simplicity from this ancient time, and tried to return to those ideals.

This philosophical movement originated in France by those who wanted to build systems of government free of tyranny. It was an important time that restored government to a process allowing for creativity and diversity. It was under this influence that the American Revolution was born. Eventually victory over the British created a new country, the United States of America, founded on the idea that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, America’s Independence Day. Powerfully written by Thomas Jefferson, it expressed the ideals of the Classical period and inspired the French Revolution (1789-1799).

The composers of the classical period were Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), and early works by Beethoven (1770-1827). Some historians include music by all composers from the mid-1700s to the early 1800s as part of the Classical period.

During this time changes in the political structure of society allowed for the emergence of a wealthy middle class who could afford to buy concert tickets. This meant that composers no longer had to rely on rich patrons for financial support. They began to market their music to a larger audience who enjoyed simpler melodies they could remember. Composers gained popularity by writing music that would be easily identified with their name. It was during the classical period that the Sonatina, or “little” Sonata, was perfected.

With a Main Theme, followed by a Variation of this theme and finishing with a restatement (or Recapitulation) of the theme, it was simpler and more memorable than the longer Sonata Form. A favorite of piano students today is Muzio Clementi’s Sonatina, Op.36, No. 3.

Playing sonatinas is a great way for piano students to appreciate simplicity and the spirit of creativity that inspired the emergence of free nations.

Here is a quote from a Greek philosopher, Aristotle (384-322 B.C.)

“Music has the power of producing a certain effect on the moral character of the soul, and if it has the power to do this, it is clear the young must be directed to music and must be educated in it.”

So, take it from this wise guy - Encourage your students or children in piano to play piano sonatinas, and develop simplicity and creativity in their playing - and their character!

PC Games - Dungeon Hack

With the early craze of PC adventure games back in the 80s, you just couldn’t get enough of them. Every month, game players would wait for the next release. What adventure would they be up against next? And what could be better than to be able to create your own adventure? That was the premise of the original Dungeon Hack by the makers of Dungeons & Dragons. Unfortunately the game didn’t deliver on its promises.

Dungeon Hack could have been a great idea if the makers of it had put the time into it that was necessary. But as with so many products that we see everyday, this was obviously a rush job and it showed.

The premise of Dungeon Hack was simple. Instead of the game engine giving you a set game to play where you journey through some dungeon looking for treasures and fighting monsters, with this game you could design your own adventure and your own dungeon so that each game was different. What could be more exciting than that?

Except the game was anything but exciting. The number of problems with the game far outweighed the number of things that were good about it. Let’s start off with the good parts as that won’t take very long.

The only good part about this game was that you could indeed “technically” make an infinite number of dungeons and adventures. You could designate how many levels, what kinds of monsters and treasures and a number of other things. On the surface, this would appear to make this a game you could play over and over without ever getting tired of it.

But the actual game play itself didn’t quite work that way. Dungeon Hack was simply a random dungeon creator. Even though each one was “technically” different, the truth of the matter was, each one was the same. The only difference in the game, from one play to another, was that the maze was laid out differently and you encountered different monsters in different areas and found different treasures. But the game play itself felt the same each time. It wasn’t like playing a different game. It was simply a continuation of the game you played the last time you fired it up. Add to that the fact that the graphics were horrible, even by 1980s standards and this game was almost unplayable.

In the years since the original Dungeon Hack was released, other customizable games have come out. Whether or not they were able to achieve what Dungeon Hack could not is a matter of opinion. Certainly Dungeon Hack had its appeal. For those who didn’t need more than just a random dungeon each time they played, it served its purpose. But for those who wanted a different story, in which case this game had none, then you were really out of luck. Dungeon Hack had no story, no cohesive structure and no real interest to a die hard game player.

Maybe the next time somebody comes out with Dungeon Hack they’ll do a better job of it.

Environment and the Next Generation

Often we hear environmentalists say “I want to leave a pristine environment for my Grand Children!” This is very noble indeed, hats off to that level of commitment and belief in the future; I truly applaud such wonderful selfless thought, however it is hard to say if the next generation will be good stewards or not, as they may have to cut down trees simply for survival due to the population increase and desired space.

Is the gentleman from the environmentalist party willing to take that risk or pass the torch yet or shouldn’t we put upon ourselves to set things up in such a way that the problem never gets bad enough for them to have to worry? The last generation was not such wonderful stewards either and neither were the American Indians for that matter, as there are many accounts of them pillaging and even starting forest fires to drive game from the forest to hunt or kill their enemy tribes? Similar to Saddam lighting the oil fields on fire I guess, it appears humans as a species kind of suck in that regard, never have been so great as stewards really.

Although I am not an environmentalist, as I think most of them are completely nuts, we all know we need clean water and air for safe healthy living and we should all be concerned with that, and stay reality based as we find solutions which help mankind’s progress and civilization, while simultaneously protecting the environment in North America. Be thinking here, we all need to get on the same page and stop fitting over semantics in all this time wasting sound and fury, as it does not signify much.
